A 3-alarm fire swept through an historic part of Temple's downtown on Tuesday. The First Baptist Church in Temple caught fire around 5:30 in the morning. The church is more than 70-years old.
Firefighters got to the church just before 5:30 Tuesday morning. And after being there 13 minutes they called for help and even called in off duty officers. At one point 70 firefighters fought the flames.
It shut down nearby streets in the area at First and Barton Avenue and Calhoun and Main, and even closed down the church's daycare which cares for about 100 kids.
This church was built in the 1930's and firefighters say they're worried the walls will collapse because there's not enough supports.
We don't know the cause of the fire yet, but smoke was first noticed in the roof. Tuesday night at seven the church met at the youth building on Main Street for a prayer service and talking about where the congregation will meet on Sunday.
