Texas man gets 20 more years for attacking marshal

Associated Press - March 6, 2010 5:45 AM ET

HOUSTON (AP) - A South Texas man who nearly killed a federal marshal in a courthouse attack has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Thirty-1-year-old Jose Garcia Jr. was sentenced Friday in federal court in Houston. Garcia is already serving a 50-year sentence for murdering his cousin. The sentences will be served concurrently.

Garcia pleaded guilty in the May 2009 attack on the federal marshal. Already in custody, Garcia lunged at the deputy marshal at the federal courthouse in McAllen and slashed his throat with a razor blade.

Garcia told authorities he had "felt a vibe" when he saw the deputy marshal earlier that day and that "he wanted to get him right there."

The marshal survived the attack. It took nine stitches to close the wound in his neck.
