KCEN-TV, KCEN-HD, Waco, Temple, Killeen, Bryan, TexasCCISD teacher named region 12 teacher of the year

Copperas Cove Independent School District once again, has the best teacher in the region. Martin Walker Elementary School teacher, Billie Diaz, has been chosen by the Region 12 Education Service Center as the 2011 Region 12 Elementary Teacher of the Year. This is the second consecutive year that a teacher from CCISD and Martin Walker Elementary has been awarded this title. For the 2010 awards, Martin Walker's Evelyn Thompson was chosen for this honor.
"It is always exciting when our teachers are recognized for the exemplary work they are doing with our students," Dr. Rose Cameron, CCISD superintendent of schools said. "Mrs. Diaz is a model teacher in CCISD and I am thrilled that for the past two years, Region 12 has recognized the quality of education Copperas Cove ISD is putting forth."
Billie Diaz is currently a third-grade teacher at Martin Walker Elementary in CCISD. Born and raised in Copperas Cove, she also attended Martin Walker during her time in elementary school. She has been teaching in CCISD for five years, all at Martin Walker. Prior to teaching in CCISD, she taught third grade in Killeen ISD.
"The staff of Martin Walker is proud to see Mrs. Diaz earn this recognition!" Marla Sullivan, Martin Walker elementary principal said. "She goes above and beyond to make learning exciting and meaningful for her students. Billie is a team player, a campus leader and is truly worthy of this honor."
As a regional winner, Diaz is automatically a semifinalist in the State Teacher of the Year Contest. State-level judging occurs at the Texas Education Agency in Austin with semifinalist judging taking place on Monday, August 16, 2010.
